Cover Image Description: Illustration of old tobacco advert, policeman smoking, text: Smoke Ogden's Midnight Flake. NO, we are not advertising tobacco. This poster (artist unknown) dates from 1908 and recalls a long forgotten age when the Beat Bobby was the cornerstone of policing. Nostalgia for those far off days was attacked last month by David Philips, a Greater Manchester ACC, in a controversial address which we carry in this issue of POLICE. Ogden's Midnight Flake, by the way, was withdrawn from the public in 1961. The days when a sergeant marched nine men off to their night beats at every town station disappeared long before that! Picture by kind permission of Imperial Tobacco.
