Caption: When off-duty recently P.O. Paul Hodge (Avon/Somerset) faced two emergencies with flair and success. One Saturday afternoon his 23-year-old wife started having labour pains and he rushed her in his car to the maternity hospital. On the way he spotted a stolen vehicle and, checking his wife was all right, followed the car and eventually stopped it. He arrested the driver and took him to a nearby telephone box to call for assistance. Police officers relieved P C. Hodge of his prisoner and the stolen car so that he could continue his dash to hospital. Less than 12 hours later his wife, Pauline, presented him with a bouncing 7-lb. daughter, Kerry Ann. Mr. Kenneth Steele (left), Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, presented P.C. Hodge with a certificate of commendation and to Mrs. Hodge went a bouquet of flowers for being so co-operative and understanding at a critical stage of her pregnancy.
